Using Generative Artificial Intelligence to Develop Needs Assessments: Results From a 2025 Survey of CME Writers

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are reshaping the development of documents in our industry. AMWA has taken important steps to broadly survey all members on their use of AI. However, focused research characterizing writers' attitudes toward AI and their uptake of this technology is lacking. To address this gap, we conducted an online survey that evaluated respondents’ use of AI when developing needs assessments (NAs). Additionally, we sought to define best practices for writing NAs and how these practices may have changed since previous iterations of this survey were conducted. For this report, we use the term CME writers to mean medical communicators who develop NAs and instructional content for accredited continuing education in the health professions.
