Abstract

Medical writing leaders today face evolving expectations for their teams as well as unprecedented volatility—from rapid advances in artificial intelligence to organizational restructuring to regulatory and economic instability. The 2025 AMWA Executives’ Forum explored how leaders can navigate this uncertainty through the lens of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) and a human-centered approach to change.

In a facilitated workshop led by executive coach Danielle Veira and informed by feedback from senior medical writing leaders, participants examined how individuals and teams experience change, why resistance emerges, and the common mindset traps that can derail progress. Attendees then applied the VUCA framework to leadership scenarios relevant to medical writing, practicing strategies to build trust, communicate with clarity, and guide teams through transition.

The session introduced practical tools—VUCA Prime, the Four Mindsets model, and the Four Quadrants of Communicating Change —to help leaders translate uncertainty into concrete actions they can use in their own organizations. This article synthesizes key takeaways from the forum and offers a clear, actionable approach for medical writing leaders to both manage and lead change with confidence, resilience, and empathy.
